Bulgaria is the fourteenth largest country of Europe and is situated in the southeast Europe. The country shares its borders with Romania to the north, Greece and Turkey to the south, Macedonia and Serbia to the West and Black Sea to the East. The old maps of Bulgaria, then partly an element of the once mighty Ottoman Empire, clearly show the topographical diversity of this country. Modern Bulgaria shares it borders with five countries, the northern border follows the Danube River. The distinguished features of the country are the Balkan Mountains, Danubian Plain, Thracian Plain, Rhodope Mountain and the Black Sea coast. The country as a part of the Balkan League fought against Turkey in the First Balkan War and against Turkey and the allies during the Second Balkan War ultimately losing the territories that were gained during the First Balkan War. Bulgaria joined the side of Germans during the World War I in the hope of gaining the territories in Macedonia. The failure led to chaos and discontentment in the country. It joined the Nazis during the Second World War but after Russia declared war on Bulgaria the country switched sides and communist government took over
