Vintage maps in this section show the modern history of Scandinavian country of Denmark which is located in the northern Europe ultimately making it a Nordic country. The country is situated south of Norway, southwest of Sweden and bordered to the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is the smallest one out of the five Scandinavian nations. The kingdom of Denmark with its constitutional monarchy established since 1849 comprises of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. It consists of the Jutland peninsula and smaller islands (around more than 400) on the Baltic Sea commonly known as the Danish Archipelago. The largest island is the Zealand where the country’s capital is situated. It shares its borders with both the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. In 1920 as a result of the Great European War the neutral Denmark had gained part of the province of Schleswig from losing Germany. Currently the kingdom possesses an approximate area of 43,000 square kilometers. Its topography is almost flat with its highest natural point being Møllehøj at around 170 meters
